Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. She was also raised by her grandmother and grew up as an only child. Scott was a graduate of the Philadelphia High School for Girls. Then she enrolled in Temple University. In addition to working two jobs part-time, she also studied secondary teaching in Temple University. She hoped to be a English teacher in high school. However, she was not able to achieve her dream, however, when after studying for three years and working as a teaching assistant, she left college. Following her first gigs doing live poetry shows, she eventually teamed up Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by the two. At a Roots performance, she announced herself as an artist. After that, she was able to secure collaborations such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She also gained experience as performers during The Canada touring of Broadway musical production Rent. She was the first artist signed by Hidden Beach Recordings.
